Rhacodactylus ciliatus, Crested gecko (Guichenot 1866)
|
|
It comes from a tropical rainforest in the New Kaledonia Islands, Grande Terre, Isle of Pins and near by Kotomo Island. Until the year 1994 this species seemed to be extinct. In this year several have been legally caught and imported into the Europe and the USA.
At night it climbs onto the thin ends of branches, and sleeps in sheded leaves on the ground. A receptive tail simplifies climbing, after its mechanical removing (if bitten off etc.) is not able to regenerate. In nature, most animals are missing their tail. Ciliatus is also a good jumper, which suprises most visitors at our place :-). During the night they communicate by quack-like sounds.
This Gecko is named after its crests starting above the eye and running over the neck on the back. It may grow up to 20cm thereof half of its size is the tail.
This species has plenty of colour variance with different patterns. If you take care of them properly, they might live 10 or more years.
